Staying in Cleveland to finish up the Stiv memorial. Many of the Dead Boys tunes were originally done by Rocket From the Tombs. Google the band and see some of the members went on to become Dead Boys & Pere Ubu. Check out a chipper Cheetah Chrome with the long hair on the right. Origins of his blistering guitar can be heard here!
Keeping the Stiv memorial going....seems like a good time to pay homage to The Dead Boys. Lots of info/sites out there on these guys....so I'll spare the time. Seems (to me) the current music biz needs a shot in the ass similar to what was done by this GREAT band.
Here's a couple of trax from Starvation Army off their In The Red 7" ep. Classic Cleveland '80s punk!!! The band on this release consisted of: Fraser A. Sims (vocals) ; John Henry Scully (drums) ; Tim Kelly (bass) ; Johnny Charles (guitar). Starvation Army-Deep Sea Diver
Jumpin' ahead to the '90s for some hardcore out of Cleveland. Here's a pair from Face Value off their Coming of Age ep. See HERElots of info on the band.
The first cut I ever heard from Wynona Carr was "Ding Dong Daddy" and it made its mark! I had to find out more about this incredible vocalist. There are several sites out there with her info along with compilation cds of her best.
There are many sites loaded with info on The Pagans so I'll save space here! Their stuff is fairly easy to score, so check around. Classic late '70s punk that never grows old. The Pagans-What's This Shit Called Love
Yet another class act to come from the north coast! Frankie & Margie released this 45rpm on the WARWICK label in 1958. This, as well as an acetate by them show up on several import compilations. That's about the extent of info known here!
From 1970 comes a rare indie label release from Crash Coffin. The LP has plenty of different styles present, all highlighting Crash's unique writing ability.
Yet another great R & B artist to emerge on the legendary KING label. Bull Moose Jackson is most famous for the risque "Big 10inch Record" release. Check out the cool site on himHERE
The Missing Lynx made a short stir in Cleveland in the mid-60's. An excellent article on the band can be found at Buckeye Beat (see side-bar link). That's where I borrowed the photo from. Here's a 1966 DYNOVOICE label release by the band.
Here's the only release by Riki and the Rikatones on the scarce MANAHATTAN label. Released in 1960, both sides rock out! This one can be found on numerous comps. Thanks to Grover from WRRO on this (you out there??).
A quick search on Google will provide plenty of info on Pere Ubu. The band has been around since 1975 with Dave Thomas as the main thread. They appeared in the cult classic Urgh! AMusic War in which they did the cut below.
I haven't found much info on The Statesmen other than this tune was released in 1967 on the TEMA label and appears to be their only release. It actually is a cover, done originally by The Clefs Of Lavender Hill.
Probably the first madman of rock n roll came right from the Cleveland area. Jalacy "Screamin'Jay" Hawkins (1929-2000) had his big hit "I Put A Spell On You" in 1956. But his career lasted up until his death. One of the first to add theatrics to the stage with rock n roll, seen here with his sidekick skull 'Henry". There are many sites devoted to this legend if you search. But the cool thing is that he started it off here.... in the Buckeye state!
I remember seeing this "party" band back during my college days. They ALWAYS were a fun time. I was suprised to see that they are still going strong after all theses years. Check out their web site HERE. From their first LP, here's a couple of favorites by Wild Horses.
From Cleveland circa 1989 comes a cut from The Vivians"Vivicide" 5-song LP. The band consisted of Diane Duncan vocals & clarinet ; Michele Temple guitar, fretless bass & backing vocals ; Rae Martello bass : and Scott Benedict drums. I haven't got much more in info on the band, but did catch them once in a small pub.
Not much can be found about this all girl group from Cleveland. This, their only single ever released, came out in 1965 on the small TEMA label. They would later get exposure on a few reissue compilation LPs such as "Girls In The Garage Vol. 1". The Bittersweets sing "Hurtin' Kind" and sound quite sexy!
